'PUNCH'

This quality hand puppet hails from the old tradition of Punch & Judy puppets that first emerged circa the late eighteenth century.
Affecting a smile that is both silly and sinister, this puppet is influenced by various interpretations of the Punch character, both as a clownish entertainer of children, and as a comment of man's darker nature.

Punch measures 16" from the bell at the tip of his hat, to the curve of his elfin shoes. His arms open a wide 11". His face is sculpted and hand painted. It is supported by a central wooden rod that is cushioned for a comfortable grip.

This Punch is individually crafted, one of seven in his edition, only five of which will be sold. Future editions will differ in fabric, color, and costume design. This edition was designed to pair with its companion Judy, who was released the summer of ’04, along with their baby.

'Judy'

Carnivalia’s Punch and Judy Collection presents it leading lady, the lovely Judy. Given the spousal abuse that she encounters from her mate show after harrowing show, she was a difficult puppet to make. Many examples that I found of Judy puppets were bland, and I feel that other artists have similarly found it difficult to approach her. Is she the ultimate victim, whose existence involves only the opportunity to be beaten with every performance? Or is she the archetype of a nitpicking wife, who inspires her husband to violence? The Judy whom I created grins and has a mad look to her eyes, and I am left believing that decades of head beatings have left her gleefully insane.

From her bell-tipped cap to her curly shoes she stands approximately eighteen inches, whereas her arms extend out to nearly thirteen.

Baby Pink Doll

Originally designed to compliment Carnivalia’s ‘Punch & Judy’ collection, this baby doll needs a new parent, following the severe abuse reported by those who have witnessed the popular puppet show. Someone ought to love it.

Ugly, yes, but aren’t most babies? This one is full of anguish, expressed by its mouth that is locked in a perpetual scream. Imagine what tears swell these swollen, fuchsia inflamed eyes. Thankfully they remain closed, sparing this babe vision of this world in all its hideousness.

The next time your alarm clock threatens you with another grim morning, know that even if you cannot express the true horror of your existential life, this doll does. Your adopted baby might not have your looks, but it mirrors your troubled soul. See yourself in it, or gaze into the abyss of its gaping maw and shudder at the reality staring back at you.

About 8” from bonnet to bottom, they are approximately 5” wide.
