Marotte: a single-rod puppet with no controls for the legs or arms. Originally, they served as a medieval jester's stick or sceptre, topped by a small head. They are usually embellished with ruffles, ribbons, bells, charms, and other such tufts of flare. The marottes that emerge from Carnivalia Studio’s bear the features of some of our most beloved dolls, given new life in this whimsical form. They make for interesting décor, and when hung upon a door they jingle merrily whenever a visitor is welcomed in.

'Sham the Monkey'

This marotte utilizes the visage of one of my favorite creations, who in his fullness is ‘Sham the Monkey.’ Although much time and care has been spent hand-painting his face, I am able to make him more available in this form, given that no time had been put into composing his otherwise detailed body and costuming. As a marotte, I have taken his head, placed it on a painted rod along with a flouncy collar, entwining ribbon, and several bells. The end result is the sort of toy one might expect to see in the hand of a jester. There is an antique quality to this piece, and the image of this fez-capped monkey is archetypal.

The end result is the sort of toy one might expect to see in the hand of a jester.
