The inspiration for my first signboard 'Miraculous Healing Tinctures' arose from snake-oils sellers, and illustrated my fascination with con-men.
These 'Revival Tablets' are inspired by the character of the charlatan, the traveling missionary who used religious icons to promise miraculous acts to healing, prophesy, or whatever desperate prayers believers wanted fulfilled.
Popular icons included wood purported to have come from the cross Jesus died on, or the bones of saints and disciples. To this day one can find broadcasts on religious television in which modern evangelists sell their specially blessed holy water, promising riches for those who sprinkle the liquid on their heads. My favorite are offers for handkerchiefs that have been wiped on the soggy brow of a preacher sweating with the Holy Ghost, yours for a substantial donation.
Despite the sarcasm of this project, I find myself spiritually inspired by these Christian themes. I love a good revival, how it connects me to something larger than myself, something mythical. Who couldn't use a smidgen of salvation now and then?
